Study Environmental Science

As a science student at UHI North Highland, you'll have the opportunity to work in unique environments and benefit from links with established and emerging industries in the area. You'll be able to base your projects and practical work around some of the most unique environments in the UK which include the flow country peatlands and the energy-rich waters of the Pentland Firth.

Programme Leader Kenny Boyd, tells us more in this video.

Why study with us

The Environmental Research Institute is a centre of aspiration that seeks to be internationally recognised for distinctive and innovative environmental science.

Our work is focused on three thematic priorities:

  • Renewable Energy and Environment
  • Carbon Water and Climate
  • Environmental Contamination and Ecological Health

The original ERI centre in Castle Street, Thurso is a stunning old Victorian School House with offices, three laboratories and a conference room with VC facilities.

Our Centre for Energy and the Environment (CfEE) is a £3 million purpose-built centre situated at the UHI North Highland campus in Thurso. It is equipped with open-plan office space, conference rooms, workshops and laboratories for teaching. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) rated CFEE's 'excellence' in environmental performance, and upon its completion, CFEE was rated as the most sustainable higher education building in the UK (2009).

We have a rapidly evolving research profile and provide a high-quality, vibrant research environment. Our highly motivated team teach on a variety of courses bringing insights from their research into the classroom.
