Due to Covid-19 restrictions, students are not able to browse the library for the foreseeable future.  If you require to borrow books please complete the online form below which will be sent directly to the library email nhclibrary@uhi.ac.uk.  The library team will check the books out to you and arrange a time for you to collect.  There will be a designated area at your nearest campus where your books will be placed for your collection.   There will also be an area for books to be returned.  If you live further than 25 miles from your nearest campus we can post a maximum of 5 books to you.  Please read the online request forms for further information.

If you live within 25 miles of your nearest campus please complete the Click and Collect online form.   

If you live further than 25 miles from your nearest campus please complete the Postal online form.

In Thurso, the Library can be found in the lower Dome building.

Library staff are on hand to help you locate resources and make the best possible use of the library and its services.

As well as stocking an extensive selection of books, journals and e-books, their facilities and services include:

  • An area for quiet, individual study
  • Tables for small group work
  • Access to PCs and laptops
  • Photocopying and binding services
  • Stationery items for sale
  • Printing account top-ups
  • A wide range of online resources

Library staff are based in Thurso but visit Alness and Dornoch campuses on a regular basis to maintain the library stock and assist with student and staff requests.

In Alness, the library can be found along the corridor on the first floor. 

In Dornoch, the library can be found in Burghfield House behind reception.

Loan Periods & Allowances

  • Students can borrow a maximum of 15 items at a time.
  • Books are usually 4 week loans.
  • Journals & DVD’s are 1 week loans.
  • External users can borrow 2 items.
  • User’s charter and resource guides available from the library.

Renewals

Loans may be renewed twice, as long as no-one else has reserved them.

Holds and Inter-Site Loans

If the item you want is on loan or held at another campus or UHI college, we can obtain these for you.

Students may be entitled to use other academic libraries via the Sconul Access scheme if staying in another town or city.

Library Catalogue

You can search the Library Catalogue by author, title, subjects, keywords etc. Searches can be limited by college and can be done from any internet PC.

  1. Bring your student ID card with you.
  2. Ensure all loans are properly checked and returned to our Issues Counter.
  3. Return or renew all loans by their due dates.
  4. Lost, damaged or unreturned books etc will need to be paid for.

Membership

Students and external users have a bar-coded ID card. This is also your library card. If you don’t have one, ask at reception.

Laminating & Spiral Binding - There is a small fee for these services.

Stationery - Various stationery for student use in the library. We also sell a wide range of stationery items. See posters displayed around the Thurso campus.

Easy Space, Study Space & PC’s

There are easy seats, study desks, PC’s and laptops available for use in the library. We also have daily newspapers as well as our fiction collection. Stationary, guillotine, laminator and binding machine are available.

Quiet Study Area

PC’s and study tables are available for quiet study time outside the main library.

Signing In

Any person using the library or quiet study area and are not attending classes must sign the register at reception.
