The Library

In Thurso, the Library can be found in the lower Dome building.

Library staff are on hand to help you locate resources and make the best possible use of the library and its services.

As well as stocking an extensive selection of books, journals and e-books, their facilities and services include:

  • An area for quiet, individual study
  • Tables for small group work
  • Access to PCs and laptops
  • Photocopying and binding services
  • Stationery items for sale
  • Printing account top-ups
  • A wide range of online resources

In Alness, the library can be found along the corridor on the first floor.  In Dornoch the library can be found in Burghfield House behind reception.  Library staff are based in Thurso but visit Alness and Dornoch campuses on a regular basis to maintain the library stock and assist with student and staff requests.

The library catalogue ( is available on any internet PC and shows all items held across UHI libraries.  Titles not held at NHC library can be borrowed from other UHI libraries, please contact the library staff at NHC to arrange this.

Prices for laminating and binding are shown by the equipment.  For advice on copyright matters see the librarian.  Stationery supplies and printing credits top ups can be purchased at the Library desk.

Home use software

Students are eligible for various free Microsoft software as part of their studies with NHC.  Visit the UHI IT help website for the most up to date information on software.

Students can also download free anti-virus software to use on their own machines for as long as they are registered as a student.  Visit the UHI IT help website for the most up to date information.


MyDay is your gateway to all your information and learning resource needs.  MyDay will also seek to keep you up to date with what’s happening around the college from social events to services that will complement and support your studies. Remember these pages are also available off campus from any internet enabled device and is also available to download in the Google Play and iStore – just search for ‘myday’. Connect also supports single sign-on. Login once and access all your services, including;

  • Email
  • My UHI
  • Blackboard
  • Mahara

ICT help guides and videos

There are a number of online services to provide you with further information and assistance on using NHC UHI ICT Services. These can be found on the UHI IT help website. There are printable guides, software downloads and videos to helpyou - if you have suggestions for any other items you would like to see, contact the UHI Servicedesk.

ICT support for students

The NHC ICT Service is here to help you with any college related ICT issue. This includes:

  • Login issues
  • Network issues, such as access to your home drive or shared drive and internet access
  • PC faults or issues, be that hardware or software
  • Printing problems

Outwith the main college campus at Thurso, please escalate issues to your local tutor or to the UHI Servicedesk where appropriate.  Although we endeavour to support students whenever possible, we regret that we can only provide verbal advice to students on their own devices and do not  provide physical technical support for student owned devices.

Use of PCs

Students wishing to use PC's during self study times are always encouraged to make use of empty classrooms location around all campuses, please ask staff for guidance.

PCs can also be found in the following areas:

  • Alness - in the library area on the first floor of Tern House in Alness (ask at reception for directions)
  • Dornoch - in library at Ross House and in the study area on the ground floor (ask at reception for directions)
  • Thurso - top floor of the dome building above the library and on the ground floor outside the library (ask at reception for directions)
