This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary research group working towards net-zero aviation. To date, ERI has undertaken work to examine the social and economic role of net-zero aviation in the Highlands and Islands region on a broad scale. The successful candidate will lead energy systems modelling work to improve understanding of the energy requirements of net-zero aviation, as part of the wider socio-economic modelling programme.

The research will be undertaken in collaboration with other regional and community stakeholders to scope and model energy requirements, proposals, and ambition for net-zero development across the region. The aim is to understand the role of renewable energy generation and storage, and the potential contribution net-zero aviation infrastructure may make to communities served by such airports.

This role offers a unique opportunity for a talented researcher with a strong technical or analytical background in energy modelling and digital twins. This multi-disciplinary position would suit candidates with an interest in net-zero aviation, renewable energy, and socioeconomics, however experience in each is not mandatory.

The researcher will work directly with a world-renowned multi-disciplinary research group based at the Environmental Research Institute (ERI). The researcher will lead on the energy modelling elements of the socioeconomic model and will work closely with ERI staff from the Environment, Economy, and Society theme, with methods being co-constructed with a socio-economic understanding.

Engagement with partners and stakeholders will be undertaken to understand and model scenarios of energy demand from the net-zero aviation sector across the region. It is envisaged that the modelling work will include electricity and hydrogen generation but may also include sustainable aviation fuel. The role offers opportunity to work closely with cutting-edge technology developers.

The post holder will develop an energy model that may be used to understand and forecast future energy demand from the aviation sector across the region. This model will include elements of digital twin to understand how different scenarios and components can influence outputs.

The post will examine hindcast data of weather conditions from identified airport sites which will be incorporated into the model to understand diurnal and seasonal generation from different renewable technologies and energy vectors (electricity and hydrogen) within the region and potentially co-located at airport sites. Associated storage requirements will also be scoped.

This is a career-boosting opportunity for a researcher to work across disciplines and contribute to research that has directly applicable industry and policy outputs.
