Peatland Scientist

Salary range Salary: £ 24,126 – 28,506
DurationAppointment will be made for a fixed period of 36 months

The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) is a distinctive research centre located in the town of Thurso in the northern Highlands of Scotland. It is part of North Highland College, one of the partners in the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI); Scotland’s newest and most distinctive university.

The ERI has a rapidly evolving research profile and provides a high quality, vibrant academic environment, and unrivalled access to some outstanding natural environments.

Within the ERI, Dr Roxane Andersen who leads the Carbon Water & Climate theme recently secured a Leverhulme Leadership Award to undertake a research programme on peatland resilience: from molecular to landscape scales.

Applications are sought from dynamic and motivated candidates to support field campaigns for the programme and to set up and run mesocosm experiments investigating blanket bog responses to hydrological stress. Applicants should have recently completed a PhD or have a lower degree with equivalent experience in relevant fields, such as:

  • Environmental Sciences
  • Biogeochemistry
  • Biology
  • Geography

Experience with field work in remote areas including peatlands, and demonstrable laboratory and organisational skills will be considered favourably, however training will be provided for all aspects of the post.
