Local employers were welcomed at North Highland College UHI in Thurso recently to share industry knowledge and career guidance to students as part of the college’s first Employer Industry Day. Organised by the college’s enterprise team, the event highlighted the range of businesses in the local area from hospitality, computing, engineering and health sectors.

Over 100 students were booked onto the event and local businessman, Gary Reid, from Reid’s Bakery in Thurso was delighted to meet the students. He said “It’s a great event bringing local businesses together to show what’s available within the Caithness community. We, as people, don’t always get the perfect opportunity to do what we want in life but events like this give the students a better chance to see what’s available and chat to people in various industries.”

The event was open to all students who study at the College and HNC Accounting student, Myles Geronimo, enjoyed having the opportunity to engage with a range of employers.

Myles said, “I’ve always had an instinct to help people so I really enjoyed chatting to the people from the Ambulance Service and the Army. I didn’t realise how many various jobs and skills there are in the Army. It’s given me a good insight into what’s out there and helped me realise how many opportunities there are available.”

Also in attendance on the day were representatives from JGC Engineering, NHS, Dounreay, Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd, Envision, Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Highlife Highland, Scottish Ambulance, The Caithness Collection, Scottish Ambulance Service and SSE.

Martin Sutherland from SSE was pleased to be part of the event. “As a new business in the area, this event has been a good opportunity for us to meet local students and show them what we do”.
