Four Seasons in One Night
Hair and beauty students at North Highland College UHI brought the seasons to life at their Hair and Beauty showcase, Four Seasons. The show, now in its eighth year, featured talents from SVQ Level 2 and 3 Hair, Beauty and Hospitality department.
The show is a great way for the students to exhibit the techniques learnt from their course, as well as taste of events management, marketing, finance, research and business. The students took inspiration from a wide range of subjects and themes such as Easter, flowers, leaves and Christmas to create the day and avant-garde looks.
Lecturer, Donna Robertson was full of praise for the students. “The level of talent shown by both the hair and beauty students was exceptional. The standard of work produced was to an impressive standard, with the hair and beauty students working well together to achieve, creative hair and beauty designs, incorporating the “Four Seasons” theme.
“It is great to see how the students’ skill sets develop from the initial planning stage to the final show event. I am very proud of their progression throughout their time here at North Highland College UHI.”
The show was opened by a warm welcome from the evenings compere Willie Mackay and SVQ Level 3 Hairdressing student Fiona Swanson with a beautifully sung rendition of I See Fire by Ed Sheeran. The students efforts were judged by industry professionals Cara Duff from Blow Your Top, Ann-Marie Sutherland from Hair.com and Emma Anthoney from La Belle Beauty by Emma.
As expected, the students showcased some amazing innovation, technique and creativity bringing their own style to the models. Fiona Swanson and Katrina Davidson used soft pastel shades and flowers to create a colourful springtime feel on their models. Katherine McLeod and Ceri Williams-Shale used their models to create soft loose curls in a summer wedding inspired hairstyle with contouring and highlighted make up to show off the models features.
The audience certainly felt the heat with Linda Alexanders ‘summer’ avant-garde model with her flame inspired locks. Finishing the show with a festive feel was Karen Nicolson and Chloe Hill’s winter model with Christmas baubles and padding used to produce a dramatic, colourful Christmas tree look.
The audience were wowed with the avant-garde look for Hugh-John Campbell’s autumn look, with dramatic makeup with gold leaf details and an impressive handmade leaf décor in the inspired hairstyle.
In the end, it was Sara Craigie and Hazel Gunn’s autumn avant-garde model that stole the show. The dramatic look incorporated hair extensions and wire to create the look, as the models own hair was short then autumn spray colours was added to finish off the look.
Before the interval Level 2 Hair students presented their mannequin heads with hairstyles based on a World War II theme including pin curls and victory rolls. Ann-Marie Sutherland judged the styles and placed Caitlin Campbell first, Kimberley Munro second and Shannon Doull third.
The college’s SVQ level 2 and 3 Professional Cookery students provided interval refreshments whilst the evenings sound was looked after by Sam Galbraith. The students would like to thank the camera club and all local and national businesses who donated prizes. (Listed below).
