SVQ Social Services and Healthcare (Children and Young People) SCQF Level 7

What is special about this course?

This award meets registration requirements for Scottish Social Services Council for Children & Young Peoples Care Workers. The SVQ in Social Services and Healthcare (Children and Young People) helps to develop skills and knowledge already gained in a childcare setting.

This SVQ 3 in Social Services and Healthcare (Children and Young People) is work-based and has a structured, but flexible, delivery. Students are assessed in the workplace to allow you to demonstrate your competence.

Entry requirements

  • Suitable employment full or part-time, voluntary or paid, in children’s residential care settings or children’s educational setting
  • You should ideally hold an SVQ 2 qualification or equivalent
  • Work in a childcare setting at a supervisory level for a minimum of 3 months
  • Demonstrate an ability to write at SCQF level 5 or above with appropriate literacy skills

For Registration purposes, the completion of 4 mandatory and 4 optional units is required.   

The 4 mandatory units are: 

  • Promote Effective Communication 

  • Promote Health and Safety in the Work Setting  

  • Develop your Practice through Reflection and Learning  

  • Promote the Safeguarding of Children and Young People

You will be supported in the workplace and at your weekly drop-in session, by a local assessor who will mentor and assist you in preparing your portfolio of evidence. 

Drop-in sessions are available one day per week at our Thurso and Alness campuses and you will be strongly encouraged to attend.

Full-Time Study

Full-time students will automatically receive the fee waiver if they are eligible from the information they have provided on their course application form.

If you have been living in the UK for at least three years, are an ordinary resident in Scotland before the course start date it is likely that you will not have to pay fees for your full-time course. Please check our fee waiver policy for more information. 

Fees are payable on enrolment each academic year. If the course is not completed within 18 months there will be an additional fee of £210 for a further 3 month support to complete the qualification.

Some of our courses require students to have essential equipment/clothing please check with your course tutor.
