What is special about this course?
This award meets the registration requirements for Social Services Council for Children and Young Peoples Care Workers. The SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People) helps to develop skills and knowledge already gained in a childcare setting.
This SVQ 2 in Social Services (Children and Young People) is work-based and has a structured but flexible delivery. Students are assessed in the workplace to demonstrate competencies.
Entry requirements
- Suitable employment full or part-time, voluntary or paid, in children’s residential care settings or children’s educational setting
- Demonstrate an ability to write at SCQF level 5 or above with appropriate literacy skills
- Work in a childcare setting at a support level for a minimum of 3 months
- Full-time students: successful completion of the NC Child, Health and Social Care or relevant work experience

How will I study my course?
- Full Time
- Work based
You will undertake four days of work placement in a youth work setting, plus one day of attendance at a drop-in session at the Thurso or Alness campus.
You will be supported in the workplace and at your weekly drop-in session, by a local assessor who will mentor and assist you in preparing your portfolio of evidence.

Full-Time Study
Full-time students will automatically receive the fee waiver if they are eligible from the information they have provided on their course application form.
If you have been living in the UK for at least three years, are an ordinary resident in Scotland before the course start date it is likely that you will not have to pay fees for your full-time course. Please check our fee waiver policy for more information.
