SVQ Carpentry and Joinery (Modern Apprenticeship) SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

Many employers in our region are involved in manufacturing. Carpentry and Joinery play an essential role in the success of a construction organisation. This programme has been designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to be an effective tradesperson in this discipline allowing you to undertake a range of complex tasks. 

This Modern Apprenticeship initiative offers people the chance to work towards achieving an SVQ in Carpentry and Joinery (Construction) at SCQF Level 6. The programme combines work-based and college training and provides the dual benefit of students gaining a nationally recognised qualification while being paid as they work.

This Modern Apprenticeship consists of an SVQ, Core Skills and an Enhancement.

Entry requirements

Candidates should be employed within a construction setting.

Potential MA Carpentry and Joinery candidates should hold a qualifications in:

• Three national 4 qualifications including Maths, English and a technical/science subject

or

• Relevant post school education and training

and

be able to demonstrate an interest and desire to work in, or experience of working in, the field of construction.

Candidates without evidence of achievement of formal academic qualifications as above will be asked to undertake a short ‘profile’ document to demonstrate ability of core skills at these levels.

This Modern Apprenticeship framework is developed by the sector skills council, Construction Skills, in consultation with employers and key partners in the industry. The course can be tailored towards the specific needs of the employer but will typically contain core skills and industry specific units. These include:

SVQ

Five Mandatory units:

• Confirm work activities and resources for the work
• Develop and maintain good working relationships
• Confirm the occupational method of work
• Conform to general workplace health, safety and welfare
• Carpentry and joinery skills test

Plus one the following routes;

• Site Carpentry Option Route
• Architectural Joinery Route

Core Skills

The Communication, Numeracy, Working with Others, Problem Solving Core Skills are fully embedded within the Carpentry and Joinery (Construction) SVQ at SCQF 6 therefore these core skills are not required to be delivered as part of the MA.

Candidate are required to achieve the following core skills;

• Information and Communication Technology (SCQF 4)

(Candidates who have already been certificated as achieving Core Skills at the levels given above do not need to repeat these Core Skills as part of the Modern Apprenticeship Framework.)

Enhancements

The enhancement PDA in Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 6 (GM4P 46) must be achieved in before or during the first two years of the apprenticeship.

All of our Modern Apprenticeships are a blended delivery, the majority of the apprentices' time will be spent within the workplace however they may be required to attend college as part of their apprenticeship programme which will be agreed between the assessor and employer.

Funding

Funding is available from Skills Development Scotland to contribute towards the costs of the apprentices training under the Modern Apprenticeship Programme for all young people between the ages of 16-19 for all frameworks. Funding may also be available for young people between the ages of 20 -24 and 25+ however this is dependant on the framework and sector.
