As a Highland hospitality business, we are delighted to see First Steps into Highland Hospitality being launched. It is a step forward in bringing new entrants into the hospitality sector as well as encouraging others back into the industry. Being able to attend college to learn the theory and then being able to quickly put this into practice within a workplace, we see as a great step forward. The balance of 50:50 means more hands-on experience for the student and the potential to earn money on the days when not studying or on placement. We have worked with students on placements for many years and feel we benefit from having their input to our business, sometimes new eyes see things we can’t so there is the potential for the businesses to learn as well. With the course being a short one, the students, once in full-time employment may have gained the confidence to move on to another course which is a plus for our industry.

I am absolutely delighted that UHI North Highland is launching this new course, First Steps into Highland Hospitality.  A short, sharp, targeted course aimed at school leavers, those returning to work and those seeking a change in career direction which is intimately integrated with employers as proposed will provide not only a tremendous entry point for those considering the Hospitality sector as a career choice, but a ready source of people to support the industry’s development.  Most importantly, as there is a significant ‘work experience’ element built into the course, people qualifying will have a genuine understanding of what to expect on commencing employment.  The short 18-week nature of the course should also make it far more accessible and appealing for many, rather than a longer course commitment.
