Maths (National 5 and Higher)
What is special about this course?
National 5 and Higher Maths are designed to develop logical reasoning, analysis, problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to think in abstract ways. National 5 Maths and Higher Maths use a universal language of numbers and symbols, which allows the communication of ideas in a concise, unambiguous, and rigorous way.
Entry requirements
National 5 Maths
- National 4 Maths or equivalent qualifications and/or experience
- Candidates without achievement of National 4 Maths or equivalent qualification and/or experience will be asked to undertake a short skills profile test
Higher Maths
- National 5 Maths or equivalent qualifications and/or experience
- Candidates without achievement of National 5 Maths or equivalent qualification and/or experience will be asked to undertake a short skills profile test
The courses aim to:
- motivate and challenge students by enabling them to select and apply mathematical techniques in a variety of mathematical and real-life situations
- develop confidence in the subject and a positive attitude towards further study in mathematics
- develop skills in manipulation of abstract terms to generalise and to solve problems
- allow students to interpret, communicate and manage information in mathematical form: skills which are vital to scientific and technological research and development
- develop students’ skills in using mathematical language and in exploring mathematical ideas
- develop skills relevant to learning, life and work in an engaging and enjoyable way

Where can I study my course?
Please note, UHI North Highland will be changing its name to UHI North, West and Hebrides in August 2023, subject to Scottish Government approval. This will not impact on your choice of course or how and where you will study.

Full-Time Study
Full-time students will automatically receive the fee waiver if they are eligible from the information they have provided on their course application form.
If you have been living in the UK for at least three years, are an ordinary resident in Scotland before the course start date it is likely that you will not have to pay fees for your full-time course. Please check our fee waiver policy for more information.
