What is special about this course?

This qualification is for those involved in the sale of alcohol in both on-sales and off-sales environments. It has have been developed to comply with Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Alcohol etc. (Scotland) Act 2010.  These standards are necessary because of changes in the law which makes them part of the licensed trade’s responsibility – i.e. it is a regulatory requirement.

While the main part of the course is delivered over one day (0900-1700 hrs), including candidates undertaking an assessment at the end of the course, those enrolling will be issued with learning materials at least 2 weeks before their attendance on the one-day short course.  Candidates coming on the course are expected to study the learning materials prior to coming on the one-day short course, so that they are able to engage fully with the course delivery.

Entry requirements

No formal entry requirements. Ideally, candidates for this course should have some knowledge and/or experience of the licensed on-sales or off-sales trade in Scotland - for example, by working in the sector or through prior study.

This one-day short course covers three key areas:

  • Introduction to licensing 
  • Responsible operation of licensed premises
  • Effect of irresponsible operation on society and health

The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 states that anyone who authorises the sale of alcohol to the public must hold a personal licence. In order to hold a personal licence you must show that you have a licensing qualification.

This short course meets the training specifications of the Scottish Government and all local licensing boards across Scotland.

This course cost is £140 per person. Registration and payments must be made by Friday 8th November.
